How can I describe the magic and wonder of my fragrant gardens at night? During the gloaming, a tranquil silence settles over the forest, as the peach, mauve and pale-yellow colors of the sky blend into an enchanting twilight. According to legend, dawn and dusk are favorite fairy times as they love to watch the sun rise and set. As the lights color the trees and plants, you can almost see them, sitting on tree leaves, hands under their chins, watching the show.
As the sun sinks below the horizon and air turns purple-grey, the Night Blooming Tobacco’s start to breath their honeyed breath tinged with rose, powder and a green note that is earthy and sexy like patchouli. Lilies and Night Blooming Jasmine add to the bouquet in the night air with their narcotic-floral and resin-like scents. As the fireflies emerge carrying luminous fairies on their backs, the night pollinators begin to appear called by the fragrant voices of the flowers. Eyes sparkling, the hawk moths dive deep into the Tobacco flower and Lily flowers. Adding to the enchantment, on moon-lit nights, I can sometimes see large and elegant wings of a Luna moths as they fly over the gardens to the Red Maple trees. As the constellation Cygnus appears overhead, the chirping of the crickets and frogs create a night chorus. Fairy music in the perfumed air.
