“Forest Spirit” is an immersion in the Boreal Forest. The wild scent-scape of Balsam Fir trees, darkly sensuous mosses and the damp, silent air of the forest. Aromas are powerfully therapeutic, especially for people who spent their childhood in the North, that can can calm the mind, lower stress and increase well-being.

Inspiration
Forest Spirit perfume is a scent-song to the forest where I live most of the year. The perfume’s fragrance is based around an extraction I make, from mature Balsam Fir trees, that are blown down during the high winds of autumn. At that time of year, the crowns of the Balsam Fir trees are loaded with fragrance. The amount of rich, warm and fruity resin inside the trees’ needles has more than doubled in preparation for winter. Second, the trees’ needles are dripping with the sparkling, green and citrus smelling resin that sweated from the cones during the summer heat. Finally, the young buds, at the tips of the branches, are covered with a sweet, balsamic resin that protects the young bud tissue over the winter.
I find these blown down trees during my forest wanderings. To their complex, coniferous-scent, I add aromas of the humus and mosses of the forest under-story to create a complete sense of place. A forest cathedral that is my physical and spiritual home. The first nations people of the Northern Woodlands, say that the Balsam Fir trees, with the upright aspect to their branches, and emotionally uplifting fragrances, continually prayer for the world.

Tips for Wearing Natural Perfumes
Oil Based Perfumes
Esprit de la Nature liquid perfumes are infused into an odorless base of organic Jojoba oil. Even though Jojoba is called an “oil”, chemically it is actually a wax. Since Esprit de la Nature perfumes do not contain water, the perfumes do not expire, and can improve with age. While the volatile top notes (the aromas you smell first) will fade over time, the base and heart notes will deepen and grow more complex. Perfumes based in Jojoba do not have the “throw” or silage of alcohol-based perfumes. They are a more intimate experience.
Solid Perfumes
In solid perfumes, floral and bees’ waxes trap the aroma molecules in the perfume. The heat of your skin melts the waxes which release the fragrance slowly, over time, for a very intimate experience.
Tips for Wearing Natural Perfumes
While I formulate my perfumes to worn on the skin, I actually prefer them worn on the hair. The perfume blends with the natural musk of your hair to create complexity and a fragrance that is uniquely your own. Also, the aroma lasts longer worn in the hair. The best way to experience a natural perfume on your body is to apply it to well-moisturized skin. Rub the perfume into your skin as little as possible, because your skin will absorb the oils and waxes, that hold the fragrance, shortening the duration of the aroma. Natural perfumes are not going to have the longevity or projection of synthetics. Typically, top notes last 10-15 minutes; heart notes 30-45 minutes and base notes up to two hours or longer.
Olfactory nerve saturation.
After a few minutes of smelling the same thing intensely, our olfactory nerve turns off to sensing that smell. This phenomenon is a survival mechanism for sensing changes in and evaluating our environment. If you can’t smell your perfume, take a break from for 15 -30 minutes. You might not be able to smell the perfume on yourself, but others can.
