Inspiration:
I have a hedge of seventy Rose bushes that I grew from seed and nurtured for three years until they bloomed. So, Roses and I know each other intimately. Every summer, I spend hours harvesting rose petals among the buzzing bees. The warm, early-morning air is saturated with the aroma of the strong, warm and honeyed fragrance of Rosa rugosa. The smell of Roses in the air combined with the hypnotic buzzing of bees, sets the stage for an almost trance-like, transcendent experience when harvesting. Time slows down and I enjoy observing the rich, Rose community of which I am a part; the many kinds of bees, the waiting pink, camouflaged spiders, the roses brambles bending down to expand the colony, the birds nests
Every year the rose harvest teaches me something. My Rose sisters open my heart and speak to me about sharing, connection and mysteries. One year, the Roses taught me to leave one petal on each flower for the pollinators to land on, even though I am greedy for the petals, because I do so many things with them. In a salute to the dexterity of the human hand, I have become quite proficient at plucking, even hard to reach flowers, and leaving one petal.
In ancient texts it is said that Rose has the highest spiritual frequency of all flowers. It opens the heart chakra, allowing one to feel unconditional love. Science has confirmed that the smell of Roses reduces anxiety, depression and is good for the heart.
“What was whispered to the rose
To break it open
Last night
Was whispered to my heart.”
