Inspiration
Hildegard von Bingen would have been an extraordinary woman in any age. She was a bon vivant of life and spirit. As a German Benedictine abbess, she designed and helped build her own abbey. She was a writer, herbalist, composer, philosopher, mystic and visionary of the High Middle Ages. She is one of the best-known composers of sacred Gregorian chant. She was considered by many in Europe to be the founder of scientific, natural-history in Germany. Her faith was based on the belief that the earth, and all of nature, was the physical manifestation of God’s body. Hildegard Abbey was located at the confluence of Germany’s main trade routes. It would have benefited from access to resins, woods and spices from the Middle East and Asia. She knew and used all the ingredients of the “Hildegarde”, as they were imported in large quantities by the Catholic Church. She said together these botanicals “lessen bitterness of the body and mind, open the heart, and make the soul joyful.”
